Dizziness Treatment
Body In Mind Physio offers services for dizziness and balance issues. Patients experiencing dizziness, vertigo, vestibular migraines, or difficulties with balance and spatial awareness are encouraged to seek our care.
Dizziness can be a concerning and disabling symptom to suffer through. There are many different causes of dizziness and it is important that a thorough subjective history is taken to make sure that your dizziness is a type that Physio can help with or whether it is more a GP/specialist matter. We take the time to go through this history so we are sure you are in the right pathway.
Some common dizziness presentations that are treatable through Physiotherapy include:
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) - a type of dizziness triggered by head movements such as looking up or turning your head. BPPV can be assessed and treated very easily through manoeuvres called Hallpike-Dix and Employ’s manoeuvre.
Concussion or Post Concussion Syndrome - following a trauma to the head. Ben has gone through further training to treat concussion and post-concussion syndrome.
Cervicogenic Dizziness (Neck Driven Dizziness) - our brain is constantly communicating with receptors and feedback from every part of our body. If levels of the neck are stiff or dysfunctional, they may be sending messages to the brain that don’t quite match up with what the eyes or vestibular system (inner ear) are sensing. If these inputs are not quite matching, the brain can become confused (sensitised) and produce physical symptoms such as dizziness.
Vestibular dysfunction - the vestibular system gives us our sense of space. For balance we rely on our vision, our proprioception (receptors in our muscles that tell us where that body part is in space) and our vestibular system (inner ear). Sometimes for certain reasons, our vestibular system may be providing feedback to our brain that is a bit off which sensitises the brain and presents as dizziness. We can treat this by getting the vestibular system to perform tasks that challenge it and force it to gradually adapt to harder and harder tasks.
Ben conducts comprehensive assessments, starting with red flag screening and then investigating potential root causes such as the neck or vestibular system. Based on the assessment, a personalised treatment program is developed to target the underlying problem and improve symptoms.
